Mamoru Iriguchi

Mamoru is an award-winning performance maker and theatre designer with background in zoology based in Edinburgh. The performance works are rooted in his experience in set, costume and projection design as well as his interests and concerns in 2D and 3D, liveness and pre-recorded-ness, gender and sexuality, fairytales and evolution theories.

Mamoru’s works are known for their surrealist humour and unique DIY use of digital technology. Awards, commissions and residencies for his performance work include Autopsy Award (4D Cinema), Asian Arts Awards (Best Director, 4D Cinema), SACRED (Chelsea Theatre)/Frankfurt LAB co-commission (4D Cinema), Spring Loaded commission (The Place, GRAFT), National Theatre Studio residencies (PAINKILLERS, One Man Show, 4D Cinema), Aerowaves Priority Company (Projector/Conjector), The Place Prize commission (The Place, One Man Show), Fierce Festival/Pilot commission (MAC Birmingham, Alone in Cinema), Plateaux Festival commission (Mousonturm, Frankfurt, Into the Skirt). All his pieces have toured in the UK and internationally.

Mamoru also made intimate and interactive short pieces for diverse venues including Wellcome Collection, Brixton Market, ICA, Tate Britain, Duckie. Mamoru is currently developing Eaten, a new performance piece for families about food, eating and being eaten. It questions what we should/shouldn’t eat as well as who should/shouldn’t eat us. Mamoru’s theatre design work includes Mincemeat (Cardboard Citizens, Best Design winner, Evening Standard Theatre Awards), Alice im Wunderland (Schlosstheater Moers, Germany), Gloria: A Pigtale (Bregenz Festival, Austria /Royal Opera House), The Pink Bits (Mapping4D, Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Award winner).
