Niroshini Thambar

Niroshini is a musician and composer/sound designer for theatre and installation. UK-born with Sri Lankan heritage, she seeks to create work that explores aspects of identity, belonging and connection.

Soundtracks for young audiences include Valentina’s Galaxy (Frozen Charlotte), The Arrival (Solar Bear) and Secret Life of Suitcases (Ailie Cohen Puppets/Unicorn Theatre). Audio-visual installations include Transmission, engaging with aging, memory and creativity; Memory Box, which explores Sri-Lankan diaspora identity in the context of civil unrest and war; trans:migration, inspired by the work of Scots naturalist John Muir and connection to nature.

She has worked with a range of companies, organisations and artists including National Theatre of Scotland, Dundee Rep, Solar Bear, Selina Thompson, Ailie Cohen Puppets, Jabuti Theatre, Vision Mechanics, Annie George, Curious Monkey, Drake Music Scotland, Edinburgh Mela, Platform Easterhouse, and Frozen Charlotte.

In 2018 Niroshini was a recipient of a Starter residency with the National Theatre of Scotland, and she is currently an Imaginate Accelerator Artist, developing a new work, Girl on A String. Prior to establishing her creative practice she studied Environmental Sciences and Human Ecology, which continues to inform her artistic work.
